
Wemindji Exploration Inc. is a private company established
in 1998 by the Cree Nation of Wemindji in an effort to
set-up a training program in Prospecting and advance
mineral exploration for its local people. To date The
Company has staked an important group of claims for base
metals and diamonds. It has also signed a Joint Venture
with Dianor Resources Inc. (Wachiya agreement).
Wemindji,
from wiimin uchii meaning "red ochre mountain"
is a community located at the mouth of the Maquatua River
on the east coast of James Bay in Northern Quebec with a
current population of 1100 residents.
The Wemindji area (including Category I land) is bounded
by latitudes 52º 30' and 53º 30' and longitudes 78º 00' and
79º 00'.
96 km of dirt road connects the town of Wemindji to the
James Bay asphalt road (at km 518) that extends from
Matagami to Radisson.
